Should Lobbyists Be Allowed To Make Campaign

Choosing to allow lobbyists to make campaign contributions to politicians is the equivalent of buying opinions. Only when politicians are allowed to represent the commonwealth on issues without the intervention of special interests will the public receive true representation representative of the views of the commonwealth. The purpose of public representation in a democratic system is to represent the issues affecting the public, not the interests of special sections of the public. Statesmen originally articulated the circumstances affecting the world to the public and made decisions that would be beneficial to the representative majority. “The world has become weary of statesmen whom democracy has degraded into politicians,” Benjamin Disraeli. The point of this quote identifies the departure of the politician from representation regarding issues becoming the peoples whore, choosing to represent the opinion of the majority with disregard for the actual solution to a problem. Nearly anyone can secure a future in politics by choosing to tell people what they want to hear and supporting those who pay the most. It takes a special breed of character and integrity to face the public with the circumstance of difficult decisions and articulate the appropriate solutions despite the popular opinion. Choosing to do what is good and right in the face of overwhelming odds defines the term statesman as originally coined.The modern politician does not always choose the path of righteousness, choosing rather to secure and insulate his future as a politician by succumbing to the interests and objectives of lobbyists, special interest groups and others who seek to secure objectives by degrading the character of the leader by financially greasing opinion. This all too often does not translate to a benefit of the commonwealth. Some specific examples of this departure from public benefit are, the ease in which articles of incorporation can be obtained. One hundred years ago, the ability to incorporate took an act of God to receive approval. Due to the onslaught of special interests, this has deteriorated to the point that one merely needs to send in an application without any but the slightest explanation to receive virtually guaranteed approval via the US postal service within two weeks.Another example is the embracing of insurance, which was a form of racketeering only a century ago. Now, the commonwealth cannot procure a property or drive a vehicle without proof that they have obtained a certificate that is basically suggesting they are betting that somehow, someday, they are going to lose and have secured protection for the possibility. These are all forms of big business attempting to secure more big business for the future with little regard for the financial welfare of the common man. It is the actions of lobbyists and corporations, greasing the palms of politicians who disregard the objectives of the commonwealth, who secure such regulations. These regulations rarely translate to any real benefit to the average individual, nor is this indicate of statesmanship.
